IEBC To Give Ruling By Wednesday, January 20

Wetang’ula To Know His Fate As IEBC Hearings Start

A special committee formed by the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will on Tuesday, January 12, will begin hearings as to whether or not to remove the name of Moses Wetang’ula, the senator from Bungoma county, from the voters register.
If the IEBC does remove Wetang’ula’s name it would be in accordance with section (87) 3 of the Elections Act. The Bungoma Senator in October of 2015 was found to be guilty of voter bribery by the Supreme Court.

The hearing proceedings will begin during the morning hours on Tuesday, January 12 and will be held at the Milimani Law Courts. During the hearings, Wetang’ula will have a chance to show cause as to why action should not be taken against him.
The IEBC’s special team will be chaired by Commissioner Thomas Letangule. The team was formed by Issak Hassan, the IEBC Chairperson.

Hassan said in a statement released on Thursday, December 3: “The Special Committee shall sit on January 12 to accord Wetang’ula an opportunity to show cause why he should not be removed from the register of voters,”
The IEBC team is due to turn in their report by Wednesday, January 20.
In November of 2015, leaders from CORD warned the IEBC not to be biased in the case of Wetang’ula.
During a prayer meeting on Sunday, November 8, Wetang’ula said of the issue: “Kenyans, I want to assure you that I am here to stay. Nothing will stop me from participating in the next General Election. I am with God and everything is possible with him. They want to turn this country into an anarchy State. Let them not try to delete my name. I have my supporters and they will make their ruling of this country very difficult,”
He further accused the Jubilee government of taking action against him to keep him out of the polls.
The Supreme Court ruled that the Bungoma Senator had bribed voters during the 2013 general election at the Kanduyi Red Cross hall.
