Kidero Aide Says Sonko Asked For KSh7M Bribe From Him

Kidero Aide Turns Heat On Sonko After He Facilitated His ArrestA Nairobi county officer has now claimed that Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko solicited a KSh7 million bribe from him to have his criminal case dropped.
Nairobi county Chief of Staff George Wainaina has made the claims after he was charged of trying to bribe the senator to have him drop allegations he made about him on corruption and bribery.
In a suit filed at the High Court on Thursday, January 14, Wainaina says when he was arrested and held at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), he received several telephone calls at various times from John Mwinami, the TNA chairman Nairobi, and Brian Mugo.
According to the suit, the two indicated that they had been sent by Sonko to broker a deal to have the case withdrawn, and all he needed to do was to give them KSh7 million as payment to Sonko.
The two are also said to have called Wainaina’s brothers Moses Njogu and John Njogu with the same proposal, but Wainaina cautioned them not to succumb to the extortion scheme.
Wainaina was arrested by EACC officers while attending a church fundraiser in Nairobi. He was picked up along with his secretary, Roselyne Oluoch, on Wednesday, January 7. They then were denied a cash bail and spent the night in jail at the Integrity Centre.
The senator had contacted officials from the EACC after Wainaina allegedly attempted to bribe him.
He had allegedly wanted Sonko to stop raising issues with ‘corrupt practices’ occurring in the Nairobi county government.
Wainaina allegedly attempted to silence Sonko by giving him KSh1 million. The flamboyant senator then notified EACC officials about the issue. On Tuesday, January 5, an assistant to Sonko along with EACC officials went to the offices of Wainaina and picked up KSh500,000 in cash, with a promise to return and pick up the remaining balance on Wednesday, January 6.
In his suit, Wainaina also wants the court to dismiss a case against him on grounds that it was instigated by Sonko and not the DPP or EACC as enshrined in law.
“It is now clear that the DPP and EACC have abdicated their constitutional and statutory mandates to Sonko, or are working in concert with the respondent in running a mafia-style cartel that extorts the innocent mwananchi,” he said.
In recent days, Sonko has intensified his fight against rot in Kidero’s government, threatening to resign if the killing of hawkers in the capital do not stop.
Sonko also oversaw the arrest of a number of county council askaris who are allegedly behind the murder of 19 hawkers in Nairobi.

Their arrest came after the senator raised an alarm and escalated the issue to the DPP and the Nairobi DCIO.
