Wilson Sossion Disowns Teachers Pay Deal With Uhuru

Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) secretary general Wilson Sossion has distanced himself from the deal the union reached with President Uhuru Kenyatta over their September 2015 pay and salary negotiations.
Sossion said he was unaware of the meeting between the teacher’s union, President Kenyatta and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Sossion was conspicuously missing in the meeting the President convened between the teachers union’s steering committee, the TSC commissioners, deputy president William Ruto and Education ministry officials.

“I am not aware of any agreement with TSC… I am not aware of any meeting at State House,” Sossion as quoted by KTN. The Knut boss added, “I am the holder of the seal of the union and the spokesperson of the union”.
Despite Sossion saying he never received any invitation to attend the State House meeting or gave the meeting his blessings, Knut chairman Mudzo Nzili said the Knut secretary general was aware of the meeting with president Kenyatta.
“I was there with the steering committee and he (S0ssion) was aware. We agreed that no teacher will be victimised,” Nzili as quoted in The Standard.

On Tuesday November 10, 2015, Knut chairman Nzili and other union officials ironed out a standoff over the September 2015 pay with President Kenyatta.
The teachers, who will now be paid their September 2015 salaries, were apparently being punished by their employer, the TSC for ‘absconding’ work when they went on strike to demand the implementation of a 50-60 per cent pay rise award. The tutors had been awarded the pay rise by Justice Nduma Nderi of the Labour court in June 2015.
At the November 10, 2015 meeting, the president directed that all the teachers who were at work during the five-week strike should be rewarded for their dedication. The teachers who did not go to strike number over 40,000 while those who missed their pay for being on strike number over 240,000.
Equally, it was agreed that the teachers should withdraw all cases they had filed against the government in relation to the dispute. This comes at a time when the teachers were preparing to go to the Supreme Court to fight for their 50-60 per cent pay rise that was quashed by the Court of Appeal on November 6, 2015.

The president directed the TSC to hold negotiations with the teachers’ unions with a view to reach an agreement over pay rise. A deal should be arrived at in a month.
