The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko now
wants an inquest into the mysterious death of University of Nairobi
student Mercy Keino re-opened.
Tobiko on Tuesday November 3, 2015 told a court in Nairobi that crucial evidence was tampered with and there was a need to re-open the inquest, according to Daily Nation court reporter Vincent Agoya.
Mercy’s body was found on Waiyaki Way in Nairobi’s Westlands area two years ago after she had attended a party hosted by Kiambu Governor William Kabogo at Wasini Luxury Suites.
An autopsy that Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor carried on the body could not determine what led to the death of Mercy because of several fractures it bore.
It was difficult for Oduor to determine whether Mercy was killed elsewhere and her body dumped on the road, or whether she was hit by a vehicle on Waiyaki Way.
The request to re-open the inquest will be determined on Tuesday November 11, 2015.
During the inquest, Kabogo testified after he had been accused by witnesses of assaulting Mercy, something he denied.
He however said that he got annoyed at Mercy’s misbehaviour after she became drunk but did not assault her and only held her on the shoulders before asking her friend to take her away, Agoya reports.

The DPP had ordered a public inquest into her death after police
investigations failed to establish the truth behind her mysterious
death.
Scolastica Kamemba, the woman who invited Mercy to the party and the
last person to see her alive, testified that Kabogo assaulted her before
she stormed out of the party.
During the closed inquest that had been made public, it emerged that throughout the inquest that Mercy was drunk on the fateful night and that there was a scuffle.
