Immediate-former Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and National Planning Anne Waiguru had a phone conversation with President Uhuru Kenyatta moments before she resigned from her plum perch in the Jubilee government.
State House sources told the Sunday Nation that Waiguru held a phone chat with Uhuru and later on proceeded to declare at a press briefing that she was leaving her position as a Cabinet secretary.
“Waiguru spoke on the phone with the President Saturday (November 22, 2015) morning and said the pressure was taking a toll on her health,” the unnamed source is reported to have said.
While making the dramatic announcement that she was leaving the position, Waiguru confirmed that she had spoken to Uhuru and asked him to give her another job – probably not a Cabinet secretary position again.
“I have therefore… requested his the President to relieve me of the responsibilities of the Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning and should he find it fit, to accord me such lighter duties as he shall deem appropriate,” Waiguru said.
Speculation has been rife as to why and what led defiant Waiguru to cave in to pressure and leave office just 15 days after she had vowed that she would never resign.
One school of thought is that Waiguru was increasingly becoming a “political liability” for the Jubilee government with the opposition easily using the graft allegations leveled at her ministry as a low-hanging fruit to attack the government.
Some of Uhuru’s MPs in Parliament have been calling for her resignation.
The President is seeking a second term in office and is said to be keen on the factors that may affect his chances of clinching the seat once again.
There is another school of thought that Uhuru’s mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, may have played a role in the resignation of Waiguru.
It is not clear neither confirmed what Mama Ngina may have said about the matter but there are reports that she may have read the riots act to her son.
Waiguru has become the first secretary in Uhuru’s Cabinet to leave office.
Uhuru has for a long time been asked to drop her from the Cabinet by both sides of the government although he remained deaf to the calls fuelling speculations of a clandestine affair with Waiguru.
He recently clarified that she was not his girlfriend.
