WANTED AL-SHABAB

Police and security agencies have released the photos of 11 wanted al-Shabaab suspects on Friday, December 18.
The photo of a twelfth suspect was not available to the security agencies.
Police are requesting the public’s help with information about the whereabouts of the terror suspects, whom security agencies consider to be armed and dangerous.

An intelligence report quoted in The Star stated about the suspects: “Kenya’s security agents have issued a terror alert following intelligence reports of the 11 listed terrorists possibly carrying out an attack during the festive period.”

The eleven are thought to have been involved in the planning of previous terror attacks within Kenya, including the attacks on Mpeketoni in June of 2014.
The wanted al-Shabaab suspects are thought to have re-entered Kenya by coming over the border from Somalia.
The group has taken responsibility for an attack it carried out in Mpeketoni  which left two people dead. The attack occurred on the evening of Wednesday, December 16, 2015.
Three soldiers from the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) were wounded during an incident involving militants from the radical group al-Shabaab in Lamu county on the evening of Sunday, December 6.
The border between Kenya and Somalia has proved to be a key battleground in the fight against al-Shabaab, with Lamu county being vulnerable to attacks from over the border. The KDF has beefed up security along the border in recent days to combat the militant group.
On Monday, November 30, a security drill intended to simulate an attack by al-Shabaab against Strathmore University ended disastrously, with one person falling to their death and more than 30 others getting injured in a panic.
The al-Shabaab has been a serious threat to Kenya for the last several years, launching a series of high profile attacks within Kenyan territory.
The group gained international notoriety in September of 2013, with several militants from the group storming the Westgate mall in Nairobi, killing at least 67 people. Several children and pregnant women were killed in the attack.
The group is thought to hold a base in the Boni forest region of Kenya, from which they train fighters and carry out attacks in Kenya.
