Majority Leader of the National Assembly Aden Duale has fired a salvo at Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua following allegations of bribe taking from British American Tobacco (BAT).
Duale on Sunday December 20, 2015 asked Karua to come out clean on claims that she pocketed KSh 7.9 Million from BAT to stop a rival company from getting a contract.
“Recently, it was Wetang’ula who was being accused of corrupt deals with BAT, today there is this allegations that Karua was involved in similar deals in the coalition government of Raila and Kibaki, we are telling Martha Karua, your time has come, you must take responsibility,” he said.
The claims surfaced on Saturday December 19, 2015 following a publication of an article by by UK paper, The independent, saying that the money was paid to Karua through a contact person named Mary Mukinda.
She is currently a board member with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and was part of Karua’s presidential campaign.
The money was paid to Karua as a donation to her campaign for the 2013 general elections where in return she apparently helped BAT obtain key KRA documents detailing the progress of the contract to supply technology equipment to Kenya.
The equipment was meant to combat cigarette smuggling in the country.
“God is miraculous because these people have been accusing President Uhuru of corruption but these allegations have confirmed that they are not clean as they would want us to believe. They must take responsibility,” said Duale.
“Do not celebrate my pain too early I shall be vindicated,” Karua tweeted.
The allegations against Karua are contained in a dossier of BAT bribery and corruption claims passed to Britain’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) by Paul Hopkins, a company whistle-blower who worked in Africa for BAT for 13 years
