CORD leader Raila Odinga has finally explained his close association with a former strong political opponent Martha Karau.
Raila acknowledged his past political differences with the Narc Kenya leader but maintained that the battles never created enmity.
“Martha and I have never been enemies. We were just in different political camps. We remain strong believers in change and that is what brings us together,” he told The Standard.
Martha Karua has been working closely with Raila and his CORD co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula after Uhuru Kenyatta was declared winner of the 2013 presidential elections, and has actively been involved in the ‘Okoa Kenya’ referendum push championed by the opposition.
Their relationship has attracted criticism from people who believe that the two should not work together following their sharp differences in the 2007 elections.
Raila’s former aide Miguna Miguna recently termed the former prime minister and Karua aspeople who lack morals and positions.
“Martha Karua is hopeless, this is a person Raila Odinga accused of stealing his elections in 2007 and now they are in bed together? Very hopeless,” Miguna said.
Back then, Martha Karua was supporting PNU candidate Mwai Kibaki who was declared the winner amid claims of rigging from ODM which had Raila as its flag bearer.
The results plunged the country into post-election violence that saw about 1,200 people killed and scores displaced.
The two antagonists later reached a political settlement with the help of international mediators to form the Grand Coaltion Government where Kibaki remained the president and Raila became prime minister.
Supporting her political association with CORD, Karaua replied to Miguna telling him that only fools do not change their minds and that Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto were once political opponents as well.
