Cheruiyot's landslide win in Kericho

What Jubilee’s Aaron Cheruiyot said after clinching Kericho senatorial seat

– Jubilee Alliance Party’s Aaron Cheruiyot won the Kericho county senatorial by-election to become the youngest senator in Kenya
– Cheruiyot overcame a serious challenge from Kanu’s Paul Sang
– The senator-elect took to social media to thank the residents for believing in him and promised them massive development
– Cheruiyot also hit out at Kanu for disputing the election saying Kanu has never embraced democracy

Kericho county senator-elect Aaron Cheruiyot has expressed his contentment and satisfaction with the landslide victory he garnered in Monday, March 7’s by-election.
Speaking after he was declared the winner of the hotly contested by-election, Cheruiyot thanked Kericho county residents for turning out in large numbers to vote him as the youngest senator in the country.
“Congratulations to the people of Kericho for the bold statement of believing in the youth of this country. This is a clear sign of trust and confidence in us. We will not let you, the people of Kericho and Kenyan Citizens down,” Cheruiyot wrote in one of his social media accounts.
The elected senator went on to promise the residents that he will do all it takes to bring development to the county.
“It is now time not only to unite the people of Kericho but also the Rift Valley and the nation and speak in one voice – development to the people,” he added.
His closest competitor, Kanu’s Paul Sang, indicated through the Kanu leadership that he was not ready to accept the result because he believes the election was marred with irregularities and voter bribery to give Cheruiyot the win.

Kanu officials led by chairman Gideon Moi, secretary general Nick Salat and Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto were conspicuously missing from Kericho Tea where the final results were being tallied.
However, Cheruiyot dismissed their claims, saying Kanu and democracy have never cooked in the same pot.
The senator-elect was, however, thankful to everyone who participated in the election, including his opponents whom he thrashed to clinch the seat.
“We wish to thank God and all those who supported us throughout the campaigns: our friends, families, our able campaigners, supporters and not forgetting our opponents,” Cheruiyot said.
Going into the by-election, Deputy President William Ruto was visibly gasping for breathing air as Kanu threatened to seriously put into question his political grip in the Rift Valley.
Large rallies held by Kanu made many believe that there was a major rift in the Valley, but the latest triumph has yet again cemented Ruto’s status as the Rift Valley kingpin.
The Kericho senatorial seat was left vacant after President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed former senator Charles Keter to the cabinet.
