Kenya may find themselves on the outside looking in regarding a massive oil pipeline deal, worth an estimated KSh 400 billion.
The pipeline was discussed by President Magufuli of Tanzania and President Museveni of Uganda, who further discussed the possibility of the pipeline going through Tanga, Tanzania. The two presidents reached an agreement to begin construction on the huge project.
Gerson Msigwa, the director of State House communication in Tanzania said in a statement about the pipeline: “The two agreed to begin construction of the crude oil pipeline from Tanga to Uganda, for the benefit of the two countries and their East African counterparts. The pipeline will have a length of 1,120 km and the project will create employment for over 15,000 people.”Kenya had hoped that the proposed pipeline through the Northern Lamu route. Uganda and Kenya had agreed to start construction using the route in 2015, but the proposal was vetoed by France’s Total, an investor in the pipeline, as being too risky.
Officials from Total have visited Museveni in recent months to convince him that the Tanga, Tanzania route is the most viable option for the pipeline.
President Uhuru Kenyatta traveled to Rwanda in December of 2015 to firm up plans regarding the future construction of oil pipelines, as a major aspect of the East African Community’s (EAC’s) Northern Integration project.
Militant group al-Shabaab are one of the major causes of concern within the Lamu region, as the group has launched repeated attacks within the area.
