The Cord candidate for the Malindi by-election, William Mtengo, has the
highest support among all the aspirants, a new opinion poll has shown.
The survey released on Wednesday shows that if the mini-poll was to be held today, Mr Mtengo, who is vying on an ODM party ticket, could win with a 61 per cent margin.
His closest rival, Mr Phillip Charo of Jubilee Alliance, would garner 29 per cent of the total votes.
The poll conducted by research firm Trends & Insights for Africa (Tifa) also showed that Mr Attas Shariff of LPK would collect only three per cent of the votes while Mr Reuben Katana (Kadu Asili) and Mr Peter Ponda of CCU would only garner 1 per cent each.
Another 5 per cent of the voters said they were undecided.
The opinion poll was conducted on February 26 to 28 in all the five wards of Malindi constituency. A total of 520 respondents were interviewed.

The research was conducted to establish the preferred MP candidate in the Malindi by-elections and also to find out which political party has the highest support in the area.
The Cord coalition enjoys the greatest support in the constituency at 67 per cent while Jubilee has a 29 per cent liking.
Only 1 per cent were affiliated to the National Alliance (TNA) party while other parties have a 3 per cent support.
“Generally, 40 per cent of the constituents feel that the constituency is not heading in the right direction,” said Tifa director Ms Maggie Ireri.
“The residents of Malindi mentioned issues such as poverty and employment as key reasons why the constituency is heading in the wrong direction,” she added.
The by-election to be held in March 7 is a hotly contested affair especially between Cord and Jubilee with candidates in a last-minute bid to win voters.
