With an estimated $170.1 million being reported in its coffers as of Sunday's estimates, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice looked like it had broken all of the records it could get its hands on. Yet the DC Comics film couldn't beat a rather interesting record after the actual grosses came in this afternoon. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is no longer the highest grossing Warner Bros film on record. That honor still belongs to 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which opened up with the Warner Bros high water mark of $169.2 million in its first weekend. This isn't a crushing defeat, as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice still broke the opening records for a March weekend, Easter weekend, and 2016 thus far. But the actual figures from Box Office Mojo show the film falling just shy of the studio's home town record with $166 million being its actual total.
Part of the potential reason that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice didn't break the Warner Bros box office record is the fact that between Friday and Sunday of this past weekend, the film suffered a massive drop in box-office traffic. Part of that is more than likely due to the fact that Sunday was, in fact, the Easter holiday. So Sunday sales were more than likely less prolific than they usually are, seeing as folks were tending to the more solemn traditions that this holiday has over other weekends.
Though looking at this weekend's numbers, Warner Bros may have found the silver lining in this remaining record. With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 remaining as their highest opening weekend, the studio will more than likely be gearing up for November's opening of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them to supplant that film as the highest grossing Warner Bros film. With the other two installments of a potential trilogy on the line, this newest chapter in the Harry Potter mythos has a lot riding on its back as well. If Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them manages to launch on the same trajectory as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, then you can imagine that Warner Bros will have a happy, record breaking 2016 indeed.
