Mtengo wins Malindi seat

William Baraka Mtengo wins Malindi by-election
  ODM’s Willy Baraka Mtengo is the new MP elect of Malindi after beating his close political rival from JAP, Philip Kitsao Charo by 15,281 votes.
Mtengo a businessman, formerly worked for the Kenya Ports Authority before he resigned and ventured into private business.
JAP’s Charo is a banker who was touted by his party as the most educated. He got 9,243 votes.

The Malindi seat fell vacant following the appointment of Dan Kazungu as cabinet secretary for mining.
The race was a contest between Jubilee’s Charo and ODM’s Mtengo.
Other candidates who were in the race were: David Mangi (Shirikisho Party of Kenya), Reuben Katana (Kadu-Asili), Ali Attas Shariff (Labour Party of Kenya), Peter Ponda (Chama cha Uzalendo) and Nelson Gunga (Federal Party of Kenya).

An opinion poll conducted by Trends and Insights For Africa, between February 26 and 28, gave Mtengo a wide lead in the race. The poll indicated that Mtengo would win the Malindi by-election by 61%. The survey placed Charo second with 29%. It gave a (+/-) 4% margin of error.
