Mike Sonko - "War on Homo sexuals"

Senator Mike Sonko in trouble after defying President Uhuru’s stand

– Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has been criticised for calling for attack on homosexuals despite President Uhuru Kenyatta’s pledge that he would ensure that no homosexual is harmed in Kenya
– Civil society group in Mombasa claimed that Mike Sonko’s statement Facebook had the ability to spark homophobic violence at the coast
Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has found himself in yet another controversial situation in Mombasa county.
Barely a month after having  a public spat with Governor Ali Hassan Joho, a section of civil society and religious leaders in the county are said to have rebuked him over his harsh comments against homosexuals in the region.
According to Mtwapa Initiative for Positive Empowerment Chairperson Evans Gichuru, Mike Sonko’s comment on gays could possibly spark homophobic violence.
“As we speak, I have already received a call from one of the homosexuals telling me he was attacked early morning at Kenol area, and is seriously injured,” Gichuru told The Star on Thursday, February 25.

The attacked homosexual reported the matter at the Bamburi police station, he said.
Gichuru reminded Mike Sonko of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s statement in October 2015 on the safety of homosexuals in Kenya.
Uhuru, who had openly differed with US President Barack Obama on homosexuality earlier in the year, said that gays equally had their rights as humans.
“I will not allow people to persecute any individuals or just beat them or torture them… Every individual has a right to be protected by the law and that’s stated in our constitution,” he said during an interview on CNN.
