Kwale County leads in number of al Shabaab trainees

Over 500 youth who are believed to be radicalized by the al Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia have returned to Kenya
-Kwale county is said to be the epicenter where radicalized youth can be found, having returned from Somalia
A Human Rights Agenda organization has noted that 500 al Shabaab trained youth have returned to the country from Somalia since the year begun.
According to the Star, the organizations’ Board of Director Chairman, Prof Halima Shauri said the Kwale is the county with the highest number of radicalized youth and returnees from Somalia.
“We know other areas experience the same issues but Kwale is the epicenter,” said Halima.
She further added that the radicalized youth were now training the children in schools and society without relevant authorities being aware of what is happening.
“We don’t know them but they know us and so we must make a contribution to counter violent extremism because terrorism is a global problem,” added Halima.

Kwale’s County Commissioner Kutswa Olaka said the government had reintegrated 48 returnees into society with 300 more pending.
Interior Permanent Secretary Karanja Kibicho on Monday, February 22, 2016 donated motorcycles, frides and fishing kits to 19 returnees in efforts to give them an avenue to earn a living and assimilating them into Kenya.
Kenyan youth have been over the years being radicalized by people affiliated with the al Shabaab terrorist group that has allegiance to al Qaeda.
Most are lured with the promise of fortune and a better life away from poverty, and so flee their homes and head for Somalia. Most radicalization tends to be done among youth of the Islamic faith.
Kenya is said to be susceptible to radicalization because of its proximity to Somali, an unstable state currently in a civil war, as well as a porous border that allows citizens from either country to cross unregistered.
